ABOUT BODEGAS CUATRO RAYAS

Cuatro Rayas was founded in 1935 and has grown today to produce 20% of all verdejo wine produced in the Rueda appellation. The more than 2,150 hectares of the winery Cuatro Rayas are meticulously controlled by the technical department throughout its growth cycle, in order to obtain the highest quality at the time of harvest.

Lead winemaker Angel Calleja joined Cuatro Rayas in 1976. “Cuarenta Vendimias” (Forty Harvests in Spanish) was launched in 2016 to celebrate Angel's 40th anniversary at the winery. This limited-edition extraordinary old-vine verdejo is made using grapes from the vines he planted during his first year at Cuatro Rayas over 40 years ago.

ABOUT RUEDA & VERDEJO

Rueda is located on the Duero river around 150 kilometers NW of Madrid. It is known for its dry, aromatic white Verdejo wines. The climate in this inland appellation is continental with hot, harsh summers, and cold winters when temperatures often drop below freezing. Torrid, dry summer days are followed by crisp, cool nights, which refresh the vines and help to retain all-important acidity. The soil is made of sand, clay and a high proportion of rolling stones, which keeps the sun’s radiation and improves ripeness, while retaining enough moisture during the Summer. Verdejo is Spain’s best-selling white grape variety, and Rueda considered the finest Verdejo-producing region. Verdejo is to Rueda what Sauvignon Blanc is to Sancerre.
