Wine Made From Old Vines
April, 4th 2025
"We often hear the term “old vines” in reference to wine, which almost always applies to limited-edition bottlings from a special vineyard or plot. But what exactly do these words mean, and more important, how do older vines affect the wine we drink? You may see it on a label or list as vielles vignes, viñas viejas, vigne vecchie, alte ruben or just plain old old vines depending on where it’s from, but these terms mean the same thing: the vines that the grapes grew on have been around longer than most of the other vines at that winery or in that vineyard."

VINAMERICAS has been championing old-vine wine since its inception in 2004. From the lesser-known Campo de Borja appellation in eastern Spain, we have the easy-drinking 50+ Garnacha made from vines that are a minimum of 50 years old. It combines the approachable aspect Garnacha with the complexity and concentration of old vines. From the appellation that put Spain on the map, Rioja, Bodegas Pujanza makes it Valdepoleo wine from the eponymous vineyard planted in 1973. This wine, more than almost any other in Rioja stands out for its fealty to the terroir of the vineyard with incredible structure and elegance. In Ribera del Duero, Bodegas Gormaz was founded on the very idea of only making its 12 Linajes wines from very-old vines by buying the vineyards of local grape growers when they retire and don't have any family to continue the winemaking tradition. Their 12 Linajes Reserva is made exclusively from vines over 100 years old! Last but not least, Legado de Orniz makes its premium Triens wine on vines more than 70 years-old that grown in the Toro appellation's famous "sea of rocks" vineyard.
